I am getting an error message saying files could not be read or the destination folder is not writable??
What is the exact word-for-word error message? At what step in the process does this error message appear? Are you in Lightroom, or in your operating system, when the message appears?
Sierra changed the permissions on the folder you use as the destination. Check the permissions and change them so your User Name has Read & Write permissions. you might also have to do that on the Top Level folder.

Safe for a few small but not show stopper bugs, Lightroom 7 works fine with sierra. This is just a permissions problem on your destination folder exactly like Lightroom is telling you. It seems that Sierra now defaults to respecting permissions on external drives whihc means that you need to check those as the others have already said. It is also possible that your destination is not set correctly in your import panel which sometimes happens after Lightroom updates. Make sure you are not trying to write the images into the root level of the startup drive but that the destination folder is set to the correct location.
