Sounds like it could be a mouse or tablet problem, but you need to supply a lot more detail, including your OS and the patch level of InDesign, as well as what sort of hardware you are using.

Sorry...I should let you know the best way of dealing with me is to pretend you're dealing with an eleven year old.
I use the software but am absolutely petrified of technology and understand so very little.
I use a magic mouse.
I haven't tried the normal stuff because I don't know what the normal stuff is.
I will attempt to follow simple instruction from the link you've given me.

Do you have some other mouse you can try? My recollection is that the magic mouse can behave this way in ID.
Great idea for the process of elimination. Have replaced the preferences and problem persists so I'm going to ask my friend if I can borrow his mouse tomorrow morning. Thank you so much for your time and expertise.
