I have an elaborate data merge question for you guys. Is it possible to merge data from an Excel spreadsheet and insert it into InDesign with a certain layout for each merge point? My desire is to merge Twitter data into an InDesign document where each tweet looks like how it looks on Twitter, with the profile image, name, date, text of the tweet and the share icons below. Is it possible to create the tweet in InDesign and then merge the appropriate cell data from Excel into text boxes with in InDesign while keeping the graphics as well? I want to create a document that looks like a series of tweets but I don't want to have to manually copy and paste each tweet layout if I don't have to
Data merge CAN merge images as well as text data but you have to provide the EXACT location of the images from the root directory all the way through to the enclosing folder and the image name. You can enter this as a string of text in an excel field and InDesign will use that information to grab the photos from their location during the merge process. If you format the InDesign File to look like a twitter feed, and you set up the excel docs with all of the image links, then Yes, you could get InDesign to do this.
