CS5.5 InDesign files saved in 2015 or earlier no longer open – WHY?

I have only ever used Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium CS5.5 on my mac that currently runs OSX Yosemite (10.10.4).

I have not needed to access my InDesign files for a year or two, so they have been saved on my external hard drive.

Recently when I went to open up a variety of InDesign files ranging from 2015 or earlier this error message came up.

I have since got a new Mac that is running OS Sierra (10.12.1) and reinstalled Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium CS5.5 but the same issue happens.

I am now installing a trial version of InDesign CC (2017) to see if that will open my old files, incase my existing software has somehow corrupt?

I'm completely out of ideas.

Can someone please help me get my InDesign files open.

First...CS5.5 is not supported under Sierra but that's not the issue here, IMO. First thing to do is patch CS5.5 to 7.5.3 and then try to open those files. I'll bet the error message changes to tell you what version of InDesign those files were saved with because what you see there is indicative of files saved in a later version of InDesign.

Thank you. Yes it did turn out to be that my files worked on the newer version of InDesign. I posted this slightly prematurely it would seem as moments after asking for help my trial version of InDesign CC (2017) installed and voila my documents opened.

On a different note, do you know if CS5.5 is due to be supported under Sierra?
