Actually... for the record... using color labels & it's working pretty nicely.
Create a smart collection with a single criterion - Collection Name / Doesn't Contain / a e i o u
Not -quite- sure what you mean, but here's how I'm doing it at the moment:
2016, all photos, color red & show only red.
As I create collections, color goes to green.
Miscellaneous photos become blue.
This way, while I do have to re-select the red-only criteria once in a while, it's really fast & I can go back to find all miscellaneous/unsorted files later.
