I've seen the new warcraft movie a while ago and i was wondering how they did some of their effects. I'm desperate to know how you should do this effect:
Warcraft - "Khadgar" Extended Character Video (HD) - YouTube at around 8 seconds. If you look at the shape then i really want to use trapcode tao. Although i have no clue how to get it in the 3d spiral shape. Also I have no clue how i should tune it into that smokey look.
Anyone has any idea?

I doubt that effect was done using a pre-rendered effect pack. Most likely it was done with particles in a 3d application. Basically emitting particles along paths or curves. The exact terminology and process would depend on what application they used: Maya, C4D, Houdini, 3DStudioMax. It could also be done inside AE using Trapcode or Stardust or Element but doing it in a proper 3D application you could render out multiple passes for flexibility in post. If your curious see if you can find trial versions of any of the applications and follow some tutorials and try to figure out how it was done. Like I said...emitting particles along paths or curves is probably the most straightforward approach.
