I hope nothing changed in InDesign. I've just tested it and it works fine - normal way.
The gap beetween objects depends on their proportions and space you are drawing
You cal use Gap Tool (U) later to reduse this space beetween objects as well

I always use the same version of indesign. Until now thre is no spacing between objects and I do not understand why now I have a big space that I am forced to reduce. It seems that I have added somewhere a default spacing option.
The default gap is the same as you would set up the gap in columns on that page, even if you don't have columns, you can have a value on it. Best you set up your master with the correct gap settings.
