InDesign 2017 control bar input affects text

Has anyone had trouble in InDesign 2017 when selecting more than one paragraph and trying to adjust space before, or indent, etc. using either the control bar or the paragraph palette? When I type a specific value in it writes over my text rather than changing the value.

and with this action I discovered the answer under another post:

A LOT of threads about this bug here already.

1. Turn on "Application Frame" under menu "Window".

and / or

2. Navigate to Preferences -> Advanced Type -> Show Adornment on Text Selection/Text Frame for more Type controls  >>  uncheck these.
