Unable to get samples to run Beta 3

I have installed the beta 3 data services samples as a web
application under jrun 4. the samples run but I get no data or
messages in any of the samples. I assume it is a config issue but
am not sure where to look. Has anyone else had this problem.

Enable logging in flex-enterprise-services.xml. Restart the
server. You should find information on the server console to help
in debugging your issue.

my version of java was too old. It showed up in the log.
