It's not yet possible to bring .psds into Sketch as editable files. It is a request I hear with some frequency, but I don't know if, or when, the capability might make it into the app. Right now, as you mentioned, they can only be brought in as images.
I'll definitely share your comments with the product team.
Hopefully I can make do with drawing over the images for now, then.

Yes, this would definitely be fantastic. Thought this would be elementary for the app, as you might want to go back on forth depending on what you do and where you are. Synching both ways would be great

I'm sorry I don't have more information (I suppose even if I did have more I probably couldn't share it anyway ).
There isn't a direct solution to it but if you save your file to EPS format and then open it in Sketch, you will be able to retain the layers.
But the only problem here is that by doing this you will loose the name of all your layers.
