Unless you are specifically going to structure your movie with levels, you really don't need to use loadVariablesNum. Level refers to the flash level that you are loading the variables into. Flash has levels, that are sort of like layers, but they are abstract in terms of using them. The main timeline of all movies is _level0. So to load variables using loadVariablesNum do this:
Always use a number and not a string when referencing the Level Number.
If you are a beginner, forget about using levels right now and try achieving the same functionality using by using loadVariables. Do this:
load a variables into the root timeline
load a variables into the relative timeline
load a variables into the time line of a movieclip named someMC
load a variables into an Object with the name someObject
var someObject:Object =new Object();
when referencing where to load the always specify either an Object or a MovieClip.

More about levels:
Yeah I'm a beginner but at my job they're making me modify an already made script, so I need to understand these things fast and am stuck using useVariablesNum()
Thanks for your answer it's much clearer now :)
