I am working on my company's benefit enrollment guide.I'm not sure if InDesign can do what I want it to do though. I have been going through and adding hyperlinks and actions for the eBook we will be exporting this as.
There are a few phone numbers in this document. What I want to happen is when a user clicks on that number while using their smart phone for the action to be for that number to open in the phone's call option. That way they don't have to enter a number and can just click a button. Is it possible to do this with InDesign?
Hi
Yes, you can do it using tel: prefix while generating the hyperlink

Hi Vinny,
Is it all one string of characters, no spaces?

Hi
Honestly I don't know.
Apple gives an example using dashes (Phone Links )
Here you can find an example with no dashes, no spaces : (Dial a Phone from a PDF Link on Mobile Devices )
Most probably both work, but I guess the best thing to do is testing, ideally with different OS...

iOS :
the Phone app supports most, but not all, of the special characters in the tel
scheme. Specifically, if a URL contains the *
or #
characters, the Phone app does not attempt to dial the corresponding phone number
Android:
Valid telephone numbers are those defined in the IETF RFC 3966. Valid examples include the following:
tel:2125551212
tel:(212) 555 1212
