Should I download all Upgrades?

I receive popups from Adobe at least weekly requesting me to install various upgrades.  Recently, I was having mal-ware problems and the installed  protector issued a list of problems that I should correct.  The Rep said the majority of issues involved were Adobe upgrades.  He told me to never install the periodic requests.  Is this correct:

No, it's complete non-sense. You won't get any malware by installing upgrades for Adobe Reader, AS LONG AS YOU GET THEM DIRECTLY FROM ADOBE AND NOT ANY OTHER SOURCE. In fact, installing updates and upgrades is a good way of preventing infections, as they usually contain fixes to security issues.
