At the beginning of each line in Adobe Indesign CS5, I get these symbols: ^#.

Why do I keep on getting these symbols in Adobe Indesign CS5:  ^#.

It's terribly problematic - every single line starts with ^#.

          Numbered lists start with #^:

If someone typed those in backwards, you would get what you are describing:

Set list type to None in Bullets and Numbering and that should take care of it. If not, come back and let us know. Here's how to get to Bullets & Numbering:

          • Click the Bulleted List button  or the Numbered List button  in the Control panel (in Paragraph mode). Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) while clicking a button to display the Bullets And Numbering dialog box.
          • Choose Bullets And Numbering from the Paragraph panel or Command panel. For List Type, choose either Bullets or Numbers. Specify the settings you want, and then click OK.

Also you posted this in the non-technical Lounge forum, so I'm going to move it to the InDesign forum for you.
