re sizing a photo

This is probably a stupid question!!

I have taken a photo which is loaded onto photo on my mac.  it is 869 x 1024 pixels.  The website I need to upload to is asking for files with approx 500 pixels width - how do i resize the photo in photoshop without loosing the proportion?

If it only specifies the width, then resize to 500 x 589 (the same aspect ratio).
