Please check if the result event is getting fired. Add a break point in the checkLogin function and debug the result object. Or just add a else block in the checkLogin function, my guess is that the if conditions are failing and so you are not seeing any changes. To be on the safe side, do add a handler for the fault event of the HTTPService.

What is the response XML format?
Thanks for your reply. I am not sure about the XML format question. I am trying to use a MySQL 5 database that is being served through php. Is there something that I should be looking for in re: to XML format?
Since he is not setting resultFormat explicitly in his HTTPService declaration, it is the default "object". This usually is bad. I advise setting resultFormat="e4x". But "text" might be ok in this case.
But do as SujitG suggests and debug the result object in the result handler.
