Lightroom Catalog is Critically Low on Space

I keep getting the following message in Lightroom 6 version 6.8 - Your disk "New Volume (D:)", which contains your Lightroom catalog, is critically low on space.  Please remove files or empty the trash to make at least 20 MB available.  I know it isn't low on space because my D drive is 4TB of which only 1.2TB have been used.  I also have 16GB of Ram memory.  I'm running Windows 7.  Does anyone know why this is happening?  Because Lightroom thinks I'm low on space (even though I'm not), is that why it's running so slow?  Your help on this would be greatly appreciated.
