Check to see if there are instances of AE running in the task manager if so kill them, reboot your system and see if things are better.
If not you should probably contact support. They will at least be able to help you figure out what information you need to provide like AE logs, Adobe logs & system event logs,
I concur with Gutter, though the symptom of the blank box, I've not seen.
Usually, if there are two or more (actually one running and you trying to launch one) instances running in task manager, it simply will not launch. In that case, task manager, kill them, and it usually works (even without a reboot), though a reboot often helps and will certainly kill all the instances.
Did you ever get After Effects to launch? Did the advice here assist you? Please let us know if you still need help with that.
