Using Lightroom CC, I want to isolate small sections of landscape photos and make separate images from them.   So I might make several images from different parts of a large photo, but I would like to save the original image.

You can make multiple Virtual copies in Lightroom and Crop each one in alternate ways. Export or Print from the VCs if you need output of images. You are cropping pixels, so output image quality may suffer for extreme crops!

You need something like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements or some other pixel editing software to do work like that. Since Lightroom is a nondestructive editor, there are limitations to what it can do. Pixel-based editors, on the other hand, give you complete flexibility to cut and paste and combine in any way that you want to.
