Image sequences cut to black randomly two thirds into timeline

We do stop-motion animation and use After Effects to do clean-up work, comping and grading as a regular activity. Most rushes we process are 5184 pixels wide and we've had no trouble with CS4 and upwards to CS6, other than the usual lag when layering up to multiple levels and adding effects, which is to be expected. Since upgrading to CC we've noticed that AE won't cope with a simple image sequence. The timeline cuts to black at an arbitrary point around 2/3rds in making post-production near to impossible. There is also black on any renders we attempt to export. The only way we can work with the animation rushes is to import the entire folder of Jpegs and sequence them in a comp which is slow and laggy, even more so with RAW images, which we sometimes need. We have 2 macs with the same problem, spec as follows:

      iMac (Retina 5k, 27-inch, Late 2015)

Processor 4 GHz Intel Core i7

      Memory 32GB 1867 MHz DDR3

      Graphics AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4096 MB

Wondered if anyone else has experienced this issue.
