"The same version as always" isn't the greatest diagnostic information in the world, y'know...
i said that because i read something about an update that caused a similar issue. which cant be the case for me since i didnt update anything but anyway.

13.5.0 is the buggiest version of After Effects that I can recall using. The behavior you are describing is exactly some of the kinds of bugs in that version.
You should really consider updating to at least 13.7.x which fixed a lot of those bugs, but I would highly recommend using 14.2 instead. It is much more stable and has a lot of really useful new features. Like, some seriously useful stuff!
You can install it without messing with your 13.5 version too, by the way. Just be sure to twirl down the "Advanced Options" in the update window and uncheck the option to remove old versions.
