I just stacked 6 images that were in consecutive order. Worked fine. Just tried with 7 images in non contiguous order and they all stacked.
When was the last time you rebooted your system?
What type of system are you using and what exact version of OS and LR are you using.
Back when I started stacking large sets of photos for timelapse, it would actually crash Lightroom. I did a bug report and they fixed it. What you're asking is a pretty processor intensive task, so perhaps doing smaller sets would achieve the same result in a faster time.
It really should have some result though.
To build on Sean's reply, LR has had several performance issues with stacks over the years. I recommend posting a bug report on the official Adobe feedback forum, where Adobe wants all bugs and feature requests posted: Photoshop Lightroom | Photoshop Family Customer Community . Include a precise step-by-step recipe for reproducing the bug. In your case, including a video screen recording would also be very helpful. To the degree you include these, Adobe is more likely to pay attention.
I did a reboot and then it worked! So thanks for that.
