My AIR app has to perform some intensive setup processes as
the application loads - e.g. loading SQLite information.
I would like to have an animated splash screen while this
process runs but my attempts to use SWF are yielding poor results.
The animation runs in fits and starts - not in a nice fluid fashion
as hoped. Is there another technique I can use for the same effect

As soon as your application is launched, I'd hide the main
window and open a new native window that can hold your preload
animation. Once its ready, close the preload window and show your
main application window.
