Issues downloading RAW files

I currently started shooting in raw with a Nikon d500 creating .NEF files. Neither will open in Photoshop Elements 12 or Lightroom 4. Aside from converting to jpeg, do I have any other options? Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Options:

1. Purchase Lightroom 6.5 or later; or subscribe to Lightroom CC 2015.5 or later
2. use the FREE Adobe DNG Converter version 9.5 or later
3. Use the Nikon software that came with your camera to convert the RAW to TIF, and import the TIFs into Lightroom

When you import your NEF files into Lr and right-click an image to Edit in Photoshop what happens? Are you getting an error message? When you are in PSE and you try to open a .NEF file do you get an error message? Please describe in more detail what is happening when you try to open or edit in PSE.

Are you using the develop module within Lightroom to process your images? You may be able to make all of your edits from within Lr depending on what it is that you want to accomplish.
