I removed the background of a graphic in Photoshop and saw the familiar checkerboard. I exported it as a png. I opened the png up in an image viewer and the background was indeed transparent. Brought the file into my InDesign project and it looks transparent on the screen. Exported as a pdf from InDesign. Opened pdf in an image viewer and it all looks good. Printed the pdf and there is a slight grey tint to the background, but it's so noticeable! I've done this lots before and never had a similar problem and not sure what I've done wrong this time.

Why not save it as a PSD?

Beyond that we need full details. Version of ID, PDF settings, what PDF viewer?

It honestly hadn't occurred to me, Bob. I'll give it a try and see if that fixes the printing when I get to work tomorrow.  Thanks for the "duh" suggestion, which I seem to need fairly often when it comes to tech stuff!

  1. If you have Photoshop use PSD,
  2. if you include vectors or text save as PDF in Photoshop and use that.
  3. But be aware, this could also be that problem: https://indesignsecrets.com/eliminating-ydb-yucky-discolored-box-syndrome.php
