CC '17: remove white background from scanned illustrations

Hi,

I am designing a 32 pp. book (5" x 7.5" tall).  The illustrations are scanned and have a white background.  I would like to remove the white background and change the color behind the illustrations/logo to that of the page color.  How can I do this?
