Whats up with the expression pick whip?

I'm trying to use bass boosted audio keyframes and turning it into an audio amplitude, and use that as an expression to create a bass bounce effect. however, in order to do this, i need to be able to use the expression pick whip. i hold ALT and Click on the slider, where the watch turns red, but there is no swirly pick whip insignia there for me to use. help???
