Ambitious Project - with interaction, can it be done?

    David Borrink
Ambitious idea from a client. Wants to know if a Flash project can have an interface where Illustrator/PDF files could be opened from within a Flash Projector file allowing users to turn on/off layers of graphics per their needs and then print out the results, all without being able to edit the data on the Illustrator/PDF files.

The projector file would be the application, and all the Illustrator/PDF files would reside on the DVD as an interactive educational product.

I'm brand new at Flash and am eager to learn it. Nothing like a real project to teach you the real thing, but I need to know if it's doable. So I welcome any input from the veterans here.

      Thanks!

          David,

Photoshop and Illustrator files are supported for input in the Flash
authoring tool -- even to the point of turning on/off layers -- but for
better or worse, Flash Player doesn't support either format at runtime.
(They're converted to Flash Player-compatible files by the authoring tool.)

I won't go so far as to say this definitively can't be done --
a.viary.com does some amazing Photoshop-like things using Flash, and recent
ActionScript does allow for manipulation of byte arrays -- so desktop
control over PSDs and AIs *might* be possible in theory, but it would be the
sort of custom programming that a only handful of the top Flash developers
in the world would know how to do.

            Thanks, David

I had a hunch that this might be too much, or that it would require the highest level of Flash understanding and/or pushing the envelope of it's capabilities.

We have a more conservative approach we're pursuing using PDFs, while using the projector feature. It will allow some user choices of layers in Reader, while keeping the main interface and menus in Flash.

Thanks for taking the time to answer me. I appreciate it.

Sure thing. Yeah, it's definitely not a natively supported endeavor.

If you're using PDFs, you might want to check into AIR (Adobe Integrated
Runtime), which is a relatively new runtime (like Flash Player) that
supports not only Flash, but also HTML/JavaScript and PDFs -- directly.
