In my MXML project, the top half visually is a 3D menu of
flying squares with textboxes containing RSS-feed news article
titles (instead of a combobox listing). Clicking on one of these
menu items places the corresponding feed description into a text
box on the bottom half of the visual layout.
I'm developing in Flex3 for the sake of learning it for more
complex projects. In this approach I need to combine MXML with
custom AS3 classes (menu math and XML reading).

There is no layout container in Flex that you can directly
add Sprites to.
