Note that even the example from the Flex docs fails the same way. I put this in the init handler and get the same damn error.

Every child you want to add to the display list must extend IUIComponent. Wrap the sprite in a UIComponent or UIMovieClip.
Yes. Or, as someone corrected me, make your component implement the IUIComponent interface.
