Do other documents also hang? If yes then try deleting your preferences. If no then this document may be unusable.

          To delete preferences:

For Macintosh Users: With InDesign closed launch a Finder Window in column view and click on your home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. Within the Library folder find the following two files and delete them: “Adobe InDesign” and “com.adobe.InDesign.plist”. When InDesign is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

After you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, it is a really good idea to create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

For Windows Users: Hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching InDesign and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset.

Can you open your back-up file? (If you don't have one, this is a great reminder of why you want to back up your active files on a separate drive.)

Sometimes simply copying the file can get rid of minor errors that are otherwise preventing you from opening your original file. Start with File > Open. Navigate to your InDesign file and click to select it. From the bottom of the Open window, choose Open Copy. InDesign will open the file as an Untitled copy.

If nothing else works, check out Markzware DTP File Recovery Service. Markzware provides a DTP (Desktop Publishing) file recovery service for bad or corrupt Adobe InDesign files, and they have helped other users on this forum.

              Hi,

in addition to above, you can check if the Indesign you are working on is the latest one... CC 2017.1

We have fixed a freezing issue in the latest release.

                Thanks all.

Yes I can open other documents and the back up file to this document, and yes i have the latest version of CC... is it doomed?

Did you try everything listed above? If nothing worked, and you don't want to pay to have it fixed via Markzware DTP File Recovery Service, I'd say open the back-up and move forward from there.
