Didn't work unfortunately. I located LR5 and LR6 .plst files and deleted them to no avail. The keyboard shortcut version also didn't work, i e it did give me the option of resetting the preferences, but that action didn't result in me being able to start LR.
uninstall everything cc including preferences, https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/uninstall-remove-app.html
then uninstall the cc desktop app, https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/uninstall-creative-cloud-desktop-app.html
clean your computer of cc files per http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
restart your computer (don't skip this)
reinstall the cc desktop app, https://creative.adobe.com/products/creative-cloud using admin account*
use the desktop app to install your cc programs/trials
*for info on how to use admin account, see solution 3 here, https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/creative-cloud-missing-damaged.html
Followed your instructions to the letter but am still having the same problem.
The Cleaner Tool cleaned what was there except "fix host file" which was still left and could not be deleted.
For kicks, I downloaded PS CC. That starts just fine.

OK thanks / Fred
Well, I spent a good long while on the phone with a very pleasant application specialist at Adobe. The long and the short of it is that the only way we could get a functional, updated LR-CC 2015 to work was by creating a new user account on the Mac. He was able to roll my installation back to the previous version on my own account, but it won't update. The interpretation was that it's a user account issue on my Mac and thus not an Adobe problem. The suggestion that I migrate everything to this new user account does not seem attracive to me......... all my other apps and programs work just fine.
Furthermore, today when I log on to the new Mac user account (after rebooting), the CC desktop won't load, LR will start but it seems that it's a non-updated version since it won't read RAW files from a new Canon M6. It suggests to look for an updated version but the server won't respond. I guess it has to be done via the CC desktop.
The specialist suggested that installing PS would give me access to the most recent Camera RAW, which seems to be true, but it does not seem to affect how LR works.
Of course, I'm pretty frustrated at this point. I've unistalled, downloaded and run Cleaner, reinstalled etc for hours and hours. I was never too keen on the subscription model to start with, and if updates aren't seamless, the whole idea seems moot. Can't I just get my old LR 6 back and get updates as file formats and camera types evolve? I did pay for the free-standing version only 7 months ago. It says that you can't buy the freestanding anymore but how about existing customers? I have zero interest in cloud-based, phone and tablet integration, and have done just fine without Photoshop until now!
If Adobe can't come through for me on this one, I'll be forced to look for other imaging software. A pity since I like LR a lot and know it well by now.
