    Editing a .fla

    mmmmmike
Last night I was messing around with an HTML/Flash template a friend of mine sent me through email. This is a pretty high quality and professional looking website that I'm looking to edit and insert into my own site. My problem is this; first I tried editing the swf file that came with the template, didn't get anywhere, and eventually found out that I can only edit .fla files (which I have). The fla looks something like this:

Cool. I want to change the text links at the bottom though. Here is what they look like in Flash 8:

I can't seem to edit them, at all. I select the Text Tool with the intention of changing the letters, and all I can ever do is create a new text box. Any idea why? thanks!

*one more thing - Do I create the hyperlink within Flash 8, or do I do that in Dreamweaver? Sorry for the amateurish questions, I got the Macromedia suite for dirt cheap through my .edu, so I'm tryin to learn as much as I can on my own. Thanks!

Lets just forget your questions for a second, because the answer would be too complex for you right now. I am not saying that to be a jerk. What I would suggest is not taking someone's template and attempting to learn Flash from it. What you need to do is start off smaller and learn the basics of Flash. Go here and do some of the tutorials:

          http://www.flashkit.com/tutorials/Getting_Started/

This will teach you the basics of Flash. Only then will you be able to take a professional template and reconfigure it for your needs.

Thank you for your concern - I will play around with some of those tutorials. In an effort to save me some grief down the road, could you please answer my origional questions so I have a documented method of doing exactly what it is I want when I get to the point of 'entering the marathon'?

I've found that forums are almost always more helpful in regards to answering my questions than any article could ever be. Not saying I'm afraid of learning on my own, it's just that I would like to get this template thrown onto my site rather quickly. Thanks!

Nickels gave you good advice. But I see you want to persist. I can't really help you from what you have shown. The text might be on a locked layer, preventing you from changing it, or many other things.

You can make a link in Actionscript (I can't think of an easy way to do it in HTML). But Actionscript is not a beginning step in Flash.

You really need to work on the basics before tackling the bigger picture.

sounds like the layer is locked or the text field is nested - make sure all layers are locked except
for the one you want to edit - i some cases there could be a graphic on a top layer that has
transprency that will will be selected even though it is invisible - lock all other layers.
