What has been changed on your system (updates patches) when the error occurs?

Do you have installed the latest version of Lightroom 6?
If not try to downlaod and install the actual version here
Thank you very much for your reply. I tried resetting the preferences. I got the preferences box, answered "yes" and then selected the current catalog when offered a choice of catalogs. But, alas, Lightroom is still not opening.
A bit more information. (My bad for not including this at the outset. I am sick at the moment, so brain not running at full throttle.):
- I had had problems with Lightroom stability a few months ago, which were solved by updating the graphics card if I recall correctly.
- There had indeed been a Windows update before the recent round of problems started, so that is a likely source of the issues.
- Hewlett Packard hasn't been able to find a fix so far, and has suggested uninstalling and reinstalling the Lightroom software. I have not tried this yet. Will it affect any of my Lightroom catalogs or data? (I was hesitant to try this without being 200% sure that I'm not going to mess up anything.)
Have you found the solution? I’m hoping you can give some guidance as this is now my problem.
