HitTest with root object: refers to object's own tree or document tree?

For years I'd used HitTest passing an object's AIArtHandle as an object in the document's art tree to begin searching behind, or under. Recently it's not selected objects I thought it should and wonder if HitTest's definition of "tree" has changed to include only the object's children or with some other limitation, or if it still refers to the entire document tree, to resume an object search below the reference object and at the given point?
