Make your marquee selection, then > Select > Convert Marquee to Path > Fill
with a color of choice.

thanks, but what if I already have the shape cut out? I spent a lot of time tracing this and I do not want to lose the work i did. I think I am just being stupid AND lazy :-) .
But...if you already HAVE the shape, why not just select it?
Or...if it's a hole, not an object, can you duplicate the object it's a hole IN, and combine (subtract, probably) it with another shape that doesn't have a hole to produce the shape?
Er...it's late, that might not make sense.
Can you post a screen shot of what you have and what you're trying to get?
