I am very new to photoshop cc and really need some help. My entire family went on a once in a lifetime vacation and everyone was present. We took a photo that would have been fantastic, but because it was shot up the stairs, everyone on the bottom half of the stairs is very clear, everyone at the top half are covered by a dark shadow and even when I bring the shadows up with the Image > Adjustments > Shadows/Highlights, everyone in front becomes too light, and those in the back are not clear. Because we had crying babies, we just didn't try to get more than a few shots and I hate to lose this photo. Is there any way to repair HALF of the photo and put it back together as a complete clear image?? Or am I asking too much?
Duplicate the layer. Adjust the top layer (Curves or Levels) so that the folks in the dark part of the group are made lighter. Then add a mask and with a soft edged brush, paint in black to reveal the correctly exposed part of the group. Then, flatten the image.
Thank you Norman; that's just the kind of advice I was looking for. I have only been working in PS for about 4 months, so I am still learning. I will definitely try the steps you have given!
