Some PDFs will not place in InDesign

I've been having an issue with InDesign CS5.5 where some PDFs will not place onto the field.  I've tried placing them from their folder as well as dragging them onto the field.  In both cases I get a notification that "PDF failed to open".  I've looked at what software was used to create the different files but there doesn't seem to be a correlation, some are made with Word and others are made with Ps, Ai and generic programs, it's happened with all kinds.  I've ended up taking the PDF into PS and saving it as a TIFF in order to place it.  Any ideas?

From your description it doesn't seem you are looking for an SDK solution. Ask in the general forum.
