Anyway to mask a part of a stroke effect itself (e.g., stroke end-points)?

Hello. I'd like to know whether it's possible to delimit the stroke effect, or at least mask it, on a layer/shape, so that I can hide parts of itself.

      For example, something like this...

Of course, this is a very simplistic example. I've got issues to fix with shape-drawing on Photoshop, like this. Almost everytime I put a shape over another shape I want to hide a part of its stroke. Unfortunately... to hide part of a stroke I need another shape to continue the background (which is a red color on this example).

In my opinion there should be at least an easy way to make lines and curves within paths on Photoshop.
