    CS3 - Export/Save as vector file???

    JoshB20
      Hello,

I have a customer trying to send artwork that he created in Fireworks CS3 that I need to have in some sort of Vector file.

It appears that Fireworks CS3 can only save an AIv8 file. When doing this, it loses its shading and some (I believe) objet styles when opening the file in AI CS2.

Is there any insight on how to do this?

      Thanks,
      Josh.

Must it be an Illustrator file? Are you unable to open a Fireworks PNG file?

I need to work with it in Illustrator.

How it gets there, I am not really concerned.

I am having him send a PNG for me to try.

The biggest thing I am worried about is the shading/styles that were used - always an issue when bouncing between different programs.

            I'll keep you posted.

            Thanks,
            Josh.

You won't be able to open the PNG file in vector format in Illustrator.

Fireworks uses sRGB color space. The colors are almost certain to change
unless you switch to that color space as well.

Color shifts don't bother me - it's the complete break down of ALL gradients.

So, basically, other than rebuilding from the v8 Illustrator mess there is very little that can be done, correct?

Correct. You'll be able to use the FW vectors, but will have to refill
                  the vectors in Illustrator.

                    Another thought...

I am not a Fireworks guy, so please forgive the basic questions I am asking here.

Why don't I just get Fireworks and work with that for printing.

                    My needs are...

                    1. CMYK printing
                    2. Selection of process colors to change to spot colors for color management.

                    Umm, thats about it.

Is this the solution I am looking for?

                    Thanks,
                    Josh.

Fireworks was developed for Web graphics. It has no CMYK color space,
only RGB. By default, the resolution is too low for printing. You really
                      should be using Illustrator instead.

                        Linda,

Thanks for bearing with me. I appreciate the insight.

Yeah, I know that Fireworks is a Web App. Unfortunately, a customer has some really cool vector artwork in Fireworks that we are trying to get into Illustrator for color management & printing.

Or, being able to print from Fireworks.

I could work around the color space.

Does it have spot/global color ability? That would be nice, but maybe not necessary.

The last sticking point would be the resolution. Even if it is in vector in Fireworks, from what you say is that it limits the output dimension/resolution. Is that correct?

                        Realisitically, I am looking for 150dpi by 15 inches wide --- or 2250 Pixels X 1800 Pixels.

Can you spec an artboard/file size that big? If we can go that big, I can deal with other limitations on the output end - unless there are Adobe imposed limits on the output quality.

                        Thanks,
                        Josh.

You can specify colors at both ends of the gradient. It doesn't use
                          printer spot color, however.

                          > Can you spec an artboard/file size that big?

Yes. You can change the dimensions and resolution in the Image size
dialog box. Choose Modify > Canvas > Image Size.
