Unsolicited Adobe update request - legitimate?

While searching documents (on Safari with a Mac) I received an unsolicited request to update Adobe. The window gave the choices of Reject/OK/Download: the "Reject" button did not work the "OK" button downloaded a dmg file that I did not open.  The file is named Adobe Player Installer.dmg (disk image): seems suspicious.

I would appreciate any security related thoughts on this....

I think you're right to be suspicious.  Especially as Adobe don't have a product just called "Adobe Player".
