    Windows folders and thumbnail views...

    Level 7
      Hi there.

Is it possible to instruct Director (MX2004) to open a folder residing on a
CD/DVD-ROM and ensure it's displayed in "thumbnail" view (Windows)?

I was thinking something along the lines of utlising Buddy API if at all
possible; if anybody out there could possibly let me know either way it
      would very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance and kind regards, Mark.

I don't believe you can with buddyAPI. The setting is an OS specific setting and is probably not exposed thru the Common Dialog API which is what buddyAPI and FileXtra and even FileIO access.

Hi there, thanks for the reply as I had an awful feeling you going to
confirm my own suspicions! Oh well, back to the drawing board as they say...
            ;-)

The Window's default folder view type as well as the view type of
specific folders can be read and set in the registry. It's not a task
for the feint of heart though. How important is it?

                Hi there Dave.

The thumbnail view is very important and is pretty much at the heart of this
particular project - is it something that could easily be switched on and
                off at the registry level?

I'm fairly comfortable with the prospect of registy changes!

With respect to it being the registry - is it something that can be acheived
                at non-administrator level?

Many thanks and kind regards, Mark.

I /think/ you can do it with a desktop.ini file - see the section
                  "ExtShellFolderViews" in
                  http://www.xs4all.nl/~hwiegman/desktopini.html

                    Hi,

the setting is a USER setting, and I guess most users like their
                    settings.

                    To the OP:
Changing user settings is very, VERY impolite, and you should find a
                    different solution to YOUR problem.
It is in the same league as changing screen-resolution or emptying the
                    recycle bin.
I have thrown away promo CD's exactly because if this. Bye bye
                    business.

(Yes, again on my crusade to convince developers to stay away from
                    users' settings and preferences ....)
