Of course you can. All variables in a class should be private, and it'd be
pretty useless if no public methods could access those variables. I'm not
sure exactly what his problem is, but that's not it.

my mistake Dave - yes of course. I was thinking of statics without invoking the class name.
there are a few syntax errors above however, in the smartfox constructor and a few semi-colons missing.
