Importing Photos from an External Hard Drive

I'm new to Lightroom.  I'm trying to import my photos from the external hard drive I use.  I don't have enough storage space on my laptop to hold all my images.  Lightroom is telling there isn't enough free space.  Is there a way to have Lightroom read and write to the external storage as opposed to internal?

Thank you.

To answer fully, you need to say which Lightroom you are using.  Assuming it is the traditional or "classic" version you can have your catalog and your files on the external drive.

(If it is the traditional LR, it would be better to post this in the classic section.  A moderator may move it there.)

Assuming "classic", how far along are you in importing.  You can move your catalog to the external or start a new catalog on the external.  Be aware that there will be a little speed reduction having your files on the external.

Which LR do you have?
