I am trying to activate an older copy of Acrobat and the program will not recognize my internet connection. Is there any way to overcome this issue? I have the serial number and I get stopped at that activation screen and asked to retry activating over the internet.

Recent Mac AND Windows operating systems have been known to cause "odd" problems
Are you using a computer Administrator account with full read/write permission?
Exactly which version of the program do you have that is causing problems?
