if you are looking to the 'w' key - look up the Key class in the Flash Help Manual - if you're going to create games then you should do some reading.
secondly if this will be a 'timed' element - you will want to use either onEnterFrame or setInterval methods to 'activate' the key Listener - and then to 'deactivate' it when the time is up, then by that point if the Key had not been pressed you could go to your game over screen.
and yes, when the Key is depressed you will want to run a 'conditional' statement (IF - ELSE IF - ELSE) to determine what action to take.
It it not the options i am having trouble with, it is how to have an animation play after the option is choses, sorry if i didnt make this clear.
