    stu legend
      Hi

When I open photo's in Fireworks it automaticaly opens withe the resolution set at 72 dpi. How can I change this so when I open photo's they open at a high res? I'm running Fireworks MX 2004 if that makes any difference. Any help appreciated.

Just change it as you open a new document window. Why do you want to
          work with a high resolution?

AFAIK, They will open at their native resolution - are you saying that
photos that you KNOW to be of a higher resolution default back to 72 dpi?

I'm using FW8 - but am pretty sure the same applies - if I scanned at my
scanners default 300dpi - then this image retains that dpi when opened
            in FW8

Your image resolution is in pixels. Note the upper part of the image
size dialog. The resolution you are referring to is printing resolution
and controls essentially how large the image will be when printed. It
has no effect on the true capture resolution of the image.

Digital cameras typically set the base printing resolution to 72 ppi. .
The lower the printing resolution, the larger the output and as a
result, the poorer quality the image is.

                Thanks Jim,

Perhaps I'm wrong here, but I think that the OP is saying that the print
resolution defaults to 72ppi when opening a doc with that originally had
a higher print resolution - my DW8 stays at the original ppi.

Maybe, but it's not the way I read it. I think the issue here is the OP
is not being very clear as to WHAT resolution he's referring to. I tried
to clear that up in my post, but I should have replied directly to the
OP's post rather than to yours. Sorry for the confusion. :-)
