Strange disappearing act - Placing in InDesign

I had a recent external hard drive issue and just moved all my backed up files back on the hard drive.

In InDesign CC 12.1.0, I go to place a JPG, but any new file I have placed in this newly restored folder on my hard drive, does not show up. It looks like it's not there. However, outside of InDesign, when you go to the finder, the file is clearly there.

It's not the file -- I can move the file into any other folder, and everything is fine.

Any ideas?

Might be worth upgrading to 2018 to see if that helps.

(keep CC2017 as well)

Yes -- thanks.

I wish I knew the "why" behind this, but I just realized I can make a brand-new folder, copy everything to it, and all is well.
