Your itemRenderer must implement IDropInListItemRenderer. By implementing that interface, the DataGrid will set your itemRenderer's listData property with a DataGridListData (that may not be right as I'm not looking at documentation, but that's close) instance. The listData will have the columnIndex and other properties.
Wow that was perfect. I have one more question....do you know how I can access the dataField value? It's not a property within the BaseListData....Thanks!
You can cast the listData to DataGridListData and get that information:
var dgld:DataGridListData = listData as DataGridListData;
trace("current field is", dgld.dataField);
