Windows 10, Photoshop, Wacom tablet not playing nice together.

    tysonr58606818 Level 1

So recently I built a new computer and installed Windows 10. I let it do all it's updates on installation and yeah, it runs just fine.

My issue is that I can't seem to find a good balance with Photoshop and my tablet settings to be able to paint efficiently. Windows Ink seems to be such a pain, but I'm forced to use it because I've tried using the photoshop preference trick to force it to use Wintab instead but it causes a lot of brush lag. However, I'm really irritated by the pop up bubbles underneath the cursor whenever I press Ctrl, alt, shift keys. I really don't need to know what buttons I'm pressing and they get in the way a lot.

If anyone knows a way to either stop the lag in Wintab mode or to get rid of the keystroke popups in Windows Ink, I would be a really happy customer.

      Cheers.

Please search this forum.  There are many threads on this subject. You mat want to add more than Windows and Wacom to  the search query.

I spent quite a long time searching the forums yesterday and could not find anything relating to lag issues when using Win Tab instead of Windows Ink. Plenty of people are switching to the Win Tab option and finding success in their workflow and a couple of people have mentioned checking for lag issues when using this method. No one has mentioned what to do if lag occurs. For now I'm using Windows Ink because I need to get work done, but I keep trying to find a solution here every time it becomes annoying. I use the ctrl, alt and shift keys a lot in my work. Maybe once per second on average and it is really annoying to have my view blocked by the text bubble that keeps popping up.

Make sure you have not set brush spacing to 1% one a large document that you have zoomed way out and can stroke across the full canvas.

I have always used brushes with varying spacing and settings. The problem is most noticeable with brushes with long spacing but high details. I'm just adjusting myself to this at the moment because there just isn't any solution. Now I'm having issues with photoshop freezing up my whole system. I'm not sure if these two issues are related. I have my scratch disk and OS running on one partitioned disk and I think once PS starts to cache it just wrecks windows. Strangely when my PC comes out of it's coma after about 10 minutes I find all of my Wacom tablet settings have been reset and google chrome has closed. There's something really strange happening here. I'm going to set my Photoshop memory level to next to nothing and push it hard and see if it freezes again. If so I might be needing more RAM and maybe a separate scratch disk just for this version of PS....

How much free space do you have on your PC boot disk that you have Temp, Photoshop's first scratch disk and system paging on.  I have seen Photoshop use 100+GB of scratch space one my machine.  Windows need quite a bit of free space on your boot disk to work well.   If Photoshop fill that Windows running will go to pot till you close Photoshop and it returns its scratch space to free space.

I have 40GB of RAM on my machine. I have cause Photoshop to use all of it. However Photoshop normally  uses around 10GB of RAM.  I would think if all you are running is Photoshop 16GB of Ram should do fine.  If You also do video use Premier Pro and After Effects etc more RAM would help.

My windows partition has 17GB of space left. I deliberately gave it a pretty decent disk allocation to give it room for temp files and future update trash that it will likely dump. Photoshop is also installed on that partition.

I have a separate disk partition for Photoshop and saved files and it has 346GB free. It should be tons of space for a scratch disk but I'm just wondering if it is causing issues being on the same hardware as my OS. When the freezing happens the red light indicating disk write is continuously on. I can also hear a lot of noise coming from my disk indicating that it is writing something pretty big. I just never would have thought it would completely stop all disk traffic just for that one task. The time doesn't even change until it unfreezes.

I also have a decently fast 8GB RAM card. I know it should be 16GB but I've dropped the available RAM down to 8% for Photoshop and I have had no problems at all I'm not sure how to trigger Photoshop to start a cache write.

Did you change your Photoshop preferences scratch disk setting.  Adobe defaults it to your boot disk.  Photoshop can eat 17GB in no time. If your Photosho's Preferences  fist scratch is your boot disk and there is only 17GB free you need to change your Preferences IMO.  The Disk is also used for temp files, application user saved data and paging. Make your boot disk the last Photoshop scratch disk. Photoshop will fill scratch disk 1 before  using scratch disk 2.  If Photoshop fill your startup disk your system will not be able to run well.

Yeah, I changed that right out of the gate. I don't want it to use the startup disk at all. One of the things that has happened a couple of times is that it will have a message after the freeze up saying that Chrome as encountered an error and it is no longer open. Another thing happened just today where it left a message saying 'exception processing message code 0xc0000005 parameters...' I've looked all around for the answer to what this sort of stuff means but I can't find anything relating to Photoshop and the specific problem I'm having.

Another thing I've noticed just now after a few hours of painting with the WinTab settings enabled is the brush stroke only lags on the first small section of the stroke. Anything after the first tiny movement of the tablet pen is smooth. Is there anything that could be causing lag only on the beginning of each stroke? I notice it on every tool in Photoshop.

Hi Tyson.  Can you paste your system information here please?  Photoshop > Help > System Info > Copy and paste to this thread.

Did I read that you are using your boot drive for Photoshop scratch space?  If yes, then 17Gb is nowhere near enough free space.  In fact it is not really enough for Windows to run well.

Download and install WinDirStat, and try and free up some space.  There are heaps of web pages that give you advice for this.  The first thing I would do is turn off Hibernate if it is still running.  Then use WinDirStat to look for large chunks of data, and Google how to move them to another drive.

Is this a laptop or desktop system?

If you are having strange happening like chrome croaking and other strange termination errors. You should run some RAM stress checking diagnostics you may be having hardware issues.   If you are running Windows 10 I think it may has some problems and may be causing some delays in execution.  At least on my machines windows file explorer is not as responsive as it was in prior versions of windows and File system dialogs also seem to studded.   I find myselfe rebooting  to clear up performance issues like mouse lag.

Hey Trevor. I partitioned my only disk drive on installing windows so that I would have 60GB just for Windows and the rest for photoshop and all my files. So my first partition is for my OS and the second for PS, data and scratch disk. Though I think I accidentally installed PS on my primary partition so... Might move it. Here is the system info:

Ran a Windows memory scan and a memtest86 test for my RAM. No errors after 2 hours. So.... Not a RAM issue I think. I also did a lot of testing today on my tablet lag issues and noticed a few interesting things.

Even though I have 'press and hold to right click' turned off it was still working whenever I used the tablet outside of Photoshop.

I opened up Regedit and turned it off from there and that stopped it. However, I still notice my cursor will blink when pressing and holding outside of Photoshop. I think Windows has this press and hold system deep inside somewhere and it is conflicting with my settings and causing a slight lag. It appears to be still looking for that press and hold function at the beginning of each stroke in PS. The only solution to stopping it is by using Windows Ink instead. There is no lag or hesitation when I use that option. The Wintab option must have some ties to the press and hold function. Note, this is only a small lag, noticed if I try to do fast lines when drawing (which is basically half of my job) So it is pretty painful at the moment as it makes my drawing feel slow and clunky. I can't really manage with Windows Ink because those pop up text bubbles for modifier keys just cover everything I'm drawing.

And actually now that I think of it I did not have any issues with crashing in Photoshop until I changed back to Wintab mode. I think it's this that is causing the crashing. I ran Photoshop for 10 hours a day for a week using Windows Ink with no issues, next week I changed to WinTab and I crash three times... I also am not entirely sure if the cursor is lagging as well as the brush stroke. It is hard to tell if there is a dislocation between the cursor and the brush rendering.

Ok, so after even more testing, I found out the problem is my GPU. Currently I'm running a really small GPU as a placeholder/mock integrated graphics processor as AMD Ryzen cards don't have integrated graphics. Turns out Photoshop actually uses more of the GPU than I thought. I suppose using WinTab also must put pressure on the GPU. I'm also running a QHD monitor from the GPU. If I turn off the use of GPU in photoshop the lag is gone! but the aliasing is horrible.

Running an overclock program I can watch the GPU usage spike to maximum every time I use the brush tool in Photoshop. I'm pretty sure this is what causes my freezing too. The GPU probably runs out of memory trying to keep up. For now I have overclocked my little GPU and things seem to be better. Fingers crossed it doesn't freeze up on me again.

Interesting to note that Windows Ink runs smoothly though. It must be more efficient or possibly somehow doesn't use the GPU. I also might try tweaking some of the Nvidia settings to see if I can switch some features off for Photoshop without it looking ugly.

Ok guys, I fixed the lag and didn't have to get a new GPU. The problem was that the GPU was throttling performance to save on power. So every action would cause it to have to suddenly pick up clock speed again and that would take a little bit of time to respond. So basically every stroke of the brush was making the GPU boost and in between each stroke it was going back into idle mode. The solution to this was to go into Nvidia control panel and turn Power utilisation settings to 'prefer performance' By default this was set to 'Optimal power' which is a nice way of saying 'save power at every opportunity by cutting performace' So if anyone else experiences problems like these, I've taken the long road to solve it for you.
